Multiplier event in Malaysia, 18/11/2023

A multiplier event took place in Malaysia on November 11, 2023. The event was led by students engaged in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) course at Universiti Malaya for the first semester of the 2023 – 2024 academic year. The students were assigned a community project involving dedicated orphanage centres. They were required to initiate contact with the centres directly to organize sessions focused on computational thinking and design thinking. The course was structured into 18 teams, each comprising 6 – 7 members. Due to varying schedules at each centre, three dates were mutually agreed upon for these activities: November 18, 2023, November 19, 2023, and November 25, 2023. The students from Universiti Malaya were available for participation on either Saturdays or Sundays, aligning with the arranged dates.

During the visitation at the orphanage centre, photographer or videographer of the group should record every moment at the centre. Here is the list of tasks that HCI students need to perform at the orphanage centre:

  • Computational Activities (6 activities)
  • Design Thinking Activities (2 activities)

Computational thinking activities included exercises such as logic thinking, the tower of Hanoi, colouring, parsing ball, and spinning number. Students created 3 stations, with each station offering 2 activities from the above list. Children were divided into 3 groups. They rotated from one station to another. HCI students also recorded the time taken for each group to complete the tasks. 

In addition, children were engaged in design thinking towards addressing the problems they face in their everyday lives as orphans. They engaged in the 30 circles creativity exercise and other activities.
